Dual Theme: Light and Out of Place

Digital image/print (2024)

The two themes I decided to photograph are “light” and “objects out of place.” Specifically, light and how it shapes the atmosphere of a place, and tracking the same object in different spaces it should not be in. I decided on these two because they are both themes I’m interested in and have worked with before in some form.

Inspiration from this piece comes mostly from my first ever project with a DSLR camera, Domestic Life. I took pictures of my childhood friend under the colored light of my glitter lamp, highlighting the closeness we have and the casual nature with which she was posed. Although this project has no connection to childhood like its inspiration, I did want to focus on light, mostly natural, for the first four pictures especially.

For the other five, I was partially inspired by my final project in my Photo I class in which I took photos of liminal spaces, with “the backrooms” as a starting point for my research. While the locations themselves may not be liminal for this project, I believe it still embodies the idea that something is there that should not be and has an eerie air to it.
